Use Talent Management in Healthcare: Record Completion Rates

Talent management in healthcare is different. Why? Because we’re faced with both clinical and business challenges. While non-healthcare organizations have primarily financial drivers, we must also ensure that our employees meet clinical requirements and support desired healthcare outcomes. Another important difference in healthcare is the need for a talent management process that satisfies both clinical and human resource areas within the organization. Some organizations have seen the value of forming a strategic alliance and partnership between human resources and nursing leadership, and these organizations have witnessed the synergy and efficiencies that come with that strategy.

However important, healthcare organizations don’t necessarily have a playbook for this relationship. Just as a clinician must look at an individual’s entire medical history and his entire physiological state to address a specific health need, a healthcare organization must also look at the whole picture and develop a comprehensive strategy. Having an integrated talent management strategy can help everyone in the organization come together, have insight into each others’ worlds, and help each other meet specific departmental and wider organizational objectives.
HealthStream Success: Using Competency Management and Performance Management in Healthcare
The hospital in our case study has been a HealthStream Learning Center customer for over 10 years. Traditionally, the organization managed both its performance and competency management processes separately and using a paper-based system but eventually sought a more efficient online solution. Approximately three years ago, they engaged HealthStream to add both the Performance Center and Competency Center. This hospital now uses the full functionality of the system to deliver performance appraisals, competency assessments, and learning activities - all available online.

For the first time in the history of the hospital, it was 99.99% compliant* on both performance appraisals and educational requirements in 2011.
